The stone's Japanese name, kujakuseki (kujaku meaning ‘peacock'), derives from the fact that the pattern on the stone resembles peacock feather. The name‘malachite' is said to come from‘malache,' a plant whose green color is similar to that of the stone. This distinctive green is a result of transformed copper mineral. The stone comes in various shapes like kidney, grapes, stalactite, and many others. When polished, the stone shows an eye-like circle shape, thus it is called the‘eye stone' and has been used as a talisman to repel evil spirits.

Used by ancient Egyptians in the form of powder to make eye shadow pigment. It is said that even Cleopatra used it. But other than being a cosmetics item, it has also been used to develop the holder's insight into things, as well as for repelling maliciousness.
