The stone's Japanese name, kujakuseki (kujaku meaning ‘peacock'), derives from the fact that the pattern on the stone resembles peacock feather. The name‘malachite' is said to come from‘malache,' a plant whose green color is similar to that of the stone. This distinctive green is a result of transformed copper mineral. The stone comes in various shapes like kidney, grapes, stalactite, and many others. When polished, the stone shows an eye-like circle shape, thus it is called the‘eye stone' and has been used as a talisman to repel evil spirits.

history

Used by ancient Egyptians in the form of powder to make eye shadow pigment. It is said that even Cleopatra used it.
