Kyanite is characteristic in that it comes in various shapes and qualities, such as blade, column, or fiber shapes, and either transparent or opaque. Typically, this type of stones feature a vitreous luster on the crystal surface that is tinged with blue, but can also come in green or white.
The name is derived from the Greek word kyanos, meaning ‘blue.' It was wrongly named as cyanite by German mineralogist and petrologist Werner Schreyer, but later corrected as kyanite. The Japanese name ranshoseki, meaning ‘blue crystal stone,' comes from the fact that this blue mineral crystallizes easily.
